The Forest. La Granja
Joaquín Sorolla, 1907

Painted in oil on canvas during the summer of 1907, this landscape shows the Queen's Ford, in the town of Valsaín in Segovia, a place near La Granja de San Ildefonso where Sorolla worked that year with his family. The scene focuses on a small stream reflecting a group of pine trees, with clear attention to the light falling among the vegetation and to the patches of colour that blend into the water. The stay in the mountains took place while the painter was also working on a commission for a portrait of Alfonso XIII in hussar uniform, which places this outdoor pause in an intense period of his career. The picture later travelled to London and was shown in New York, Chicago and St. Louis, where it received different titles, such as Pine Woods of La Granja, showing how the names of his landscapes changed with each location. Today it belongs to the holdings of the Sorolla Museum in Madrid. Its interest lies in revealing Sorolla's practice of painting from nature, with a direct look at the landscape and its reflections.
