Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette
Vincent van Gogh, 1884

Skull with a Burning Cigarette is a small oil on canvas that Vincent van Gogh painted around 1885–1886, while he was living in Antwerp. Against a dark, nearly flat background, a skull holds a lit cigarette between its teeth. The work belongs to the vanitas tradition, in which skulls and objects remind the viewer of life's transience, though here the tone is more ironic than solemn.
The most common reading sees the painting as a jab at academic teaching. At the time, art students drew skeletons to learn anatomy before working from living models, and Van Gogh, who attended classes at the Antwerp academy, later complained that they were dull and taught him little. The smoking skull seems to mock that method and the seriousness with which it was taken. Other interpreters see something more personal: the gaunt figure and the decline in the painter's health have led some to regard the picture as a symbolic self-portrait. Both readings are plausible and do not exclude each other.
Technically, the skull sits at the centre in thick, dabbed brushwork, while the dark background isolates it and makes it appear more luminous. Light falling from one side models the bones and casts shadows that give the head an almost living presence. Although the structure of the bones is drawn with precision, the relaxed set of the shoulders and the fixed grin of the skull lend it an unexpectedly human expression.
During these months Van Gogh was studying Rubens and Japanese woodblock prints, and he wanted to broaden his palette and improve his portraits. The painting already shows his interest in strong contrast and in the texture of paint, and its shadowy atmosphere links it to earlier works such as The Potato Eaters, though its humour is rare in his output. Today it is held in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, and it stands as an early example of his experiments with light and expression.
