The Colossus
Francisco Goya, 1818

The Colossus is one of Francisco de Goya's most enigmatic paintings. It shows a giant of enormous proportions rising behind a range of mountains and clouds, fists raised, while below, in a gloomy valley, a crowd of people and livestock scatter in every direction. The scene is usually read as an image of the collective panic caused by the Napoleonic invasion, and for that reason it has been linked to the War of Independence and to the patriotic poetry of those years. Yet the painting lacks a clear narrative: the giant neither attacks nor protects, and his presence provokes unease rather than heroism, which is why it is often described as an open allegory rather than a specific episode.
The work is dated around 1808 to 1812, a period marked by conflict, although its chronology is not fully settled. It passed through the painter's family and later through several owners before entering the Museo del Prado in 1931, through the bequest of Pedro Fernández Durán. Its documented attribution goes back to an inventory compiled in 1812 after the death of Josefa Bayeu, Goya's wife, which lists a work called Un gigante with the same dimensions.
Its authorship has been the subject of a long and public debate. In 2008 the Prado suggested that the canvas might be by Asensio Juliá, and in 2009 the museum's report concluded that it was by an unidentified follower. Other specialists, among them Nigel Glendinning and Jesusa Vega, challenged those arguments, pointing to the weakness of the supposed signature and to the technical and thematic consistency with the rest of Goya's output, particularly the Black Paintings. In 2021 the museum restored the attribution to Goya, though discussion of the picture continues.
The painting's appeal lies both in its image, with the contrast between the monumental figure and the human chaos below, and in what it reveals about how paintings are attributed. A print on the same subject, known as El gigante, helps connect the canvas to the wartime circle of Goya's work.
