This canvas by the Italian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo shows the burial of Jesus: his body is laid in the tomb in the presence of the Virgin Mary, and an angel joins the scene. It is dated 1767 in some records, though a date close to 1770, when the artist was nearing the end of his life and the work may have been painted in Madrid, has also been proposed. For a long time it belonged to the Portuguese Pinto-Basto family. When it went to auction in 2007, the Portuguese State used its right of pre-emption and paid 1.5 million euros. In 2008 a decree declared it a work of national interest, recognising its artistic and material value. Since May 2008 it has hung at the National Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon, alongside other works by Tiepolo, which allows visitors to compare it with other moments in his career.
