Hadleigh Castle, The Mouth of the Thames: Morning after a Stormy Night is an 1829 oil painting by John Constable, now held at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven. Constable had visited Hadleigh Castle in 1814 and drew it then; that drawing led to a full-sized oil sketch, which he developed into the finished canvas shown at the Royal Academy in 1829. The preparatory sketch is in the Tate in London. The picture presents the castle as a decaying human structure overwhelmed by the forces of nature. Art historians regard it as one of Constable's most monumental works. Its rough, loose brushwork and the commanding presence of sky and landscape make it a strong example of English Romanticism in the nineteenth century, where nature outweighs the architecture it surrounds.
