Mountain with Red House
Charles Demuth, 1913

Mountain with Red House is a small watercolor on paper painted around 1913 by the American artist Charles Demuth. The scene is simple: two modest houses occupy the foreground, and behind them stretches a range of mountains. The interest lies in the contrast between the human structures, marked by a strong red, and the distant outline of the land, rendered with the light, translucent washes typical of watercolor. Little is known about its origins. It probably dates from the period when Demuth was still developing as an artist in Europe, perhaps in France. The reverse of the sheet carries a study of a bridge over the Seine in Paris, a detail that hints at the painter's travelling eye. The work stayed with Demuth until 1931, when he gave it to his friend Georgia O'Keeffe. It is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
