Olympia
Édouard Manet, 1863

Olympia, painted by Édouard Manet in 1863, remains one of the most debated works of nineteenth-century French painting. It shows a nude woman reclining on a bed and looking straight out at the viewer with a calm, unflinching expression, while a Black servant approaches carrying a bouquet of flowers. The composition borrows the arrangement of Titian's Venus of Urbino, but the change of setting is decisive: the figure is no longer a mythological goddess but a recognisable woman of her own time, probably a Parisian prostitute. That transposition is what caused the scandal when the painting was shown at the Salon of 1865, since mythological nudes were accepted while realistic ones were not.
The scene is loaded with symbols that contemporary viewers would have read easily. The black cat at the foot of the bed suggests ambiguity and furtive, possibly illicit, situations; the bouquet was a typical gift from clients to high-class courtesans; the orchid in the hair alludes to sexuality, and the single heeled slipper she still wears has been read as lost innocence. Her hand over her groin is not a gesture of modesty but an ironic refusal: the viewer, cast as the client, has not paid to see her. The dark background and the contrast of whites and blacks, with the floral embroidery of the shawl, give the painting a restrained harmony that keeps attention on the figure.
The model, Victorine Meurent, was also a painter known in Paris, which added to the stir. Manet had already painted her in Luncheon on the Grass. Years later he produced an etching of the composition with variations.
Today Olympia is a key work for understanding the move toward modern painting. By presenting a contemporary nude without mythological veils, looking back at the viewer, Manet broke an academic convention and opened a new relationship between painting and its public. It is held at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
