Perspective View with Portico
Giovanni Antonio Canal, 1765

Perspective View with Portico is an oil on canvas by Canaletto, dated 1765 and held at the Gallery of the Accademia in Venice. It belongs to the vedute genre, in which the Venetian painter recorded the urban landscapes of his city with great precision. Unlike many of his works, which soon left Venice for foreign collections, this one stayed in his native city, having been given to the Academy two years after he joined it. His signature and date appear on the painting, which helps place it firmly in his career.
The picture focuses on the portico of a palace. Canaletto blends the observation of real light with a building of his own invention, in a rococo style, loosely based on the fifteenth-century Venetian palace Ca' d'Oro, though it never existed in this form. The architecture thus works as an exercise in composition. The vanishing point falls on the seated woman to the right, and the perspective draws the eye into depth, where a round arch opens onto workers cleaning the interior.
The painting also had a teaching purpose, as it was used as a model for instruction in perspective. For this reason, and because it captures everyday life in eighteenth-century Venice, the work is valued both as a technical study and as a document of the city of canals.
