The Lamentation over the Dead Christ with Saints, also called Compianto sobre il Cristo morto, is a tempera on panel painting by Sandro Botticelli, usually dated between 1490 and 1495. It shows the moment after Christ's death, with his body lying across the lap of the Virgin Mary. Around them, a close group of figures expresses grief. Saint John cradles Mary's head in an effort to comfort her, while Mary Magdalene sits at Christ's feet in visible anguish. The three Marys and other mourners complete a ring of sorrow around the central figures. At the top, Joseph of Arimathea holds the crown of thorns and the nails of the Passion, a detail that closes the scene and points to the sacrifice behind it.

The composition is what most stands out. The figures are packed tightly into a pyramid shape, and their arrangement suggests the form of a cross. Botticelli does not follow strict naturalism here: the bodies are twisted and distorted, and the emphasis falls on a geometric rhythm that organises the whole. The close viewpoint draws the viewer almost into the scene, heightening its emotional force. Still, the clothing and its folds reflect the Renaissance language of the period.

The work is often linked to the atmosphere of Florence after the fall of the Medici and the apocalyptic preaching of Savonarola, a context that may be felt in its sober tone. The theme of the Entombment has Gothic roots, here reinterpreted in a new way. Today it is in the Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan. Botticelli also painted another version of the subject, around 1492, now in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, which allows comparison of how he reworked the scene.
