Madonna and Child enthroned with Saints and Angels
Giovanni Bellini, 1487

The Sacra Conversazione, also known as the San Giobbe Altarpiece, is one of the best-known works by Giovanni Bellini. It was painted around 1487 for the church of San Giobbe in Venice, where it originally stood framed in marble opposite the Martini Chapel. Sources indicate it was conceived for that very building: its painted arches and columns match the real architecture around it in perspective, so the imagined space seems to extend the church itself. The church lacked a second chapel, and the painting was meant to supply that missing counterpart, creating the illusion of a balanced pair.
The scene belongs to the sacra conversazione type: the Virgin and Child enthroned, surrounded by saints, with musician angels at the foot of the throne. To the viewer's left stand Saint Francis, who looks out and seems to welcome the onlooker into the scene, and Saint John the Baptist; on the right are Saint Sebastian, with two arrows in his body yet calm rather than suffering, Saint Dominic holding a book, and Saint Louis of Toulouse. Saint Job, the church's patron, occupies the place nearest the Christ child, an honour probably meant to offset the parish's decision to demote his older cult. Job and Sebastian mirror each other in their partial nudity, yet their demeanour differs: one bearded and aged, the other youthful and serene.
A coffered vault, recalling St Mark's Basilica, frames the group, and the soft golden light wraps the forms and brings the figures close to the viewer. Antonello da Messina's influence is often noted in the handling of light and form, though the result is distinctly Venetian. The work matters because it was among the first to fold real architecture into a sacred scene, a device later Venetian painters would take up. Napoleon's seizure of Venetian works removed it from the church, and it eventually reached the Accademia Gallery.
