Standing Saint
Hans Baldung Grien, 1530

This panel shows a standing saint painted by Hans Baldung around 1528-1530. His identity is uncertain: because of the lance he holds, he has sometimes been called Saint Matthias and, less often, Saint Thomas. His energetic head bears a strong resemblance to the man in The Unequal Lovers, an 1528 painting now in Karlsruhe, which suggests the two works were close in time. The panel was paired with a Saint George now in Strasbourg, which is considered weaker in its anatomy and probably partly the work of an assistant. Both may have been the wings of a dismembered altarpiece whose original form is unknown. The painting blends International Gothic with Italian Renaissance elements, typical of Baldung, and is an early example of the personal Mannerism he later developed.
