Venus and Adonis
Peter Paul Rubens, 1638

Venus and Adonis is a large oil on canvas by Peter Paul Rubens, dated 1638 and held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The scene comes from classical mythology: Adonis, a young hunter, is about to set off for the hills while Venus, the goddess of love, tries to hold him back, sensing the danger that awaits him. Her face shows distress and sorrow as she looks straight at him, and her body twists in a pleading gesture, one arm reaching toward him.
The composition is built around that tension. Adonis faces away from the viewer, turned back toward Venus, with his left foot slightly advanced as if he is about to take the next step. Yet his gaze does not settle on the goddess but drifts toward something beyond her, suggesting that his thoughts are already on the hunt. Rubens reinforces this role with the hunting boots, the spear and the dogs waiting in the background, and with heavily modelled musculature that conveys strength and vigour.
The painting pairs an interest in anatomy and classical beauty with a dramatic chiaroscuro rooted in Italian tradition, close to the work of Titian and Caravaggio. Light models the pale bodies of Venus and Cupid, which stand out against the dark background, while Adonis's tanned skin and the intense red of his garment create a second focal point. The muted sky and shadowy trees make the figures seem to step out of the frame.
The work is thought to have been intended as decoration for a country house, which may explain the emphasis on the hunter. Its documented history includes princely collections, such as that of the Elector of Bavaria, and it was later given to the Metropolitan Museum in 1937. After a restoration that removed discoloured varnish and later repaints, historians were able to refine its dating by comparing it with other works by Rubens from the same period. Rubens later painted further versions of the subject, with variations in the poses of the figures and in Venus's chariot.
