Madonna and child in glory with female saints
Moretto da Brescia, 1540

This large oil painting on canvas, dated to around 1540, shows the Virgin and Child in glory, flanked by five female martyrs: Catherine of Alexandria, Lucy, Cecilia, Barbara and Agnes. Moretto, a painter working in Brescia, received the commission from the canons of the San Giorgio monastery, and the work still hangs where it was first placed. Today it is displayed on an altar below the organ in the church of San Giorgio in Braida, in Verona. The painting is first recorded in 1648, in a text by Carlo Ridolfi, though he and later sources do not specify exactly where it stood at that time, so its early history remains somewhat uncertain. Its interest lies in bringing the Virgin, the Child and several saints together in one scene, and in its continued presence in the church it was made for.
