This oil on panel by Cima da Conegliano shows the Virgin Mary seated on a throne, holding the infant Christ, flanked by John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene. The arrangement is calm and symmetrical, with the figures grouped around the central axis, creating a sense of order and stillness typical of late Renaissance altarpieces. The painting is dated between 1511 and 1513 and was made for the monastery church of San Domenico in Parma. After the French occupation in 1811 it was taken to Paris, where it stayed after the Congress of Vienna, and it now belongs to the Louvre's collection. Its appeal lies in the balance between the solemnity of the figures and the softness of the tones, and in the way the painter brings sacred figures and their attendant saints together within a single unified scene.
