Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari

Venice, Italy · 8 works · 6 painters

Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, known locally as the Frari church, stands on Campo dei Frari in the San Polo district of Venice, Italy. Dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, it is one of the city's largest churches and holds the status of minor basilica. Built mainly in Gothic style, with later Renaissance and Baroque decoration inside, it replaced an earlier Franciscan church over the course of almost a century. Its high campanile and interior are the main attractions, above all Titian's altarpiece The Assumption of the Virgin, widely regarded as a masterpiece of his maturity. The paintings listed for the church also include works by Giovanni Bellini, the Vivarini family and Giovanni Battista Pittoni.
