Museum of Montserrat

Monistrol de Montserrat, Spain · 10 works · 8 painters

The Museum of Montserrat is located in Monistrol de Montserrat, Spain, within the Benedictine monastery of Montserrat near Barcelona. It began in 1911 as the Biblical Museum, founded by Father Buenaventura Ubach around objects gathered during his travels in the Holy Land and Egypt, and took its present shape in 1963, when those archaeological materials were joined by Renaissance and Baroque paintings held at the monastery. Its painting holdings span the thirteenth to the twentieth century, with a notable strength in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Catalan and Spanish art. Among its best-known works are Saint Jerome in Meditation by Caravaggio, Before the Bath by Ramón Casas, and The Tapestry Seller by Mariano Fortuny.
