Young Decadent is an oil on canvas by Ramon Casas, dated 1899, when the painter was working in Paris. Its format is very elongated, almost a vertical strip, which moves away from the usual half-length portraits. The work belongs to a phase in which Casas painted elegant, cosmopolitan women, a shift from the popular settings he had frequented at the Moulin de la Galette. For this reason it is usually discussed within Catalan modernisme, although its gaze draws mainly on Parisian life. The title suggests a youthful figure marked by the languor and refinement that the word decadent evoked in late nineteenth-century culture. The painting is now held at the Montserrat Museum, in the monastery of the same name, where it stands as evidence of the dialogue between Catalan modernisme and the artistic life of Paris at the end of the century.
