Kyoto National Museum

Kyoto, Japan · 6 works · 4 painters

The Kyoto National Museum, in Kyoto, Japan, is one of the country's three imperial art museums. Founded in the late nineteenth century, when Westernization led to Japanese traditions being undervalued, it was created to gather and protect the nation's cultural heritage. First known as the Imperial Museum of Kyoto, it changed names several times before adopting its present name in 1952. Its collection concentrates on premodern Japanese and Asian art, spanning painting, calligraphy, ceramics, archaeology and Chinese and Japanese sutras. Among the paintings listed on its web pages are works by Tawaraya Sōtatsu, Sesshū Tōyō, Qian Xuan and Itō Jakuchū, such as Gods of Wind and Thunder, Waterfowls in Lotus Pond and Court Lady.
