Assumption of the Virgin with St. John the Baptist and St. Catherine of Alexandria
Fra Bartolomeo, 1516

Fra Bartolomeo's panel shows the Assumption of the Virgin at the centre of the composition, surrounded by angels. In the foreground, at Mary's feet, St John the Baptist kneels beside a tomb filled with flowers, while St Catherine of Alexandria stands to the right. The arrangement is symmetrical, a trait typical of the painter, and the soft colours belong to a devotional style inspired by Raphael's models. The figure of John stands somewhat apart from the rest, and is thought to draw on Leonardo da Vinci. The upper section is distinguished by a gold background, a technique the artist had developed during his stay in Venice. The altarpiece was made for the church of Santa Maria in Castello in Prato, later passed through Rome, and ended up in the Bourbon collections in Naples.
