Eating Grapes is a watercolour on paper painted by Joaquín Sorolla in 1898, during a period when the Valencian painter was closely studying the light and colour of the Mediterranean. The subject is a boy shown frontally, in a bust-length view, wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat that shades his head and a salmon-coloured shirt that adds a warm note against the background. The scene is simple and everyday: his right hand holds a bunch of grapes while his left brings several grapes to his mouth. This spontaneity, somewhere between play and appetite, gives the picture its immediacy and sets it apart from a formal portrait. The work also has a notable history. It once belonged to Doctor Simarro and was bought by Clotilde García for 5,000 pesetas at the 1922 exhibition held at the Ateneo de Madrid. It is now part of the collection of the Museo Sorolla.
