El ómnibus Panthéon-Courcelles
Pierre Bonnard, 1890
Image not available: work still under copyright
Bonnard painted this omnibus around 1890, at a time when horse-drawn vehicles of this kind were part of Paris's everyday streetscape. The large, heavy coach is pulled by three horses and belonged to the Compagnie générale des omnibus, which ran it on one of the city's busiest routes, linking the Panthéon with the Place de Courcelles. The painter shows it in a vertical format and looks up at it from a low angle, so that the vehicle takes on an almost monumental presence and fills the center of the image. The small size of the canvas heightens that sense of weight and bulk. Rather than telling a story, the picture captures a passing moment of city life and reflects the artist's attention to movement and to the ordinary details of his time. It is now held by the Fundación Bemberg in Toulouse.
