Fruit Bowl on a Table
Pierre Bonnard, 1934
Image not available: work still under copyright
Painted around 1934, this still life shows Pierre Bonnard's fruit bowl resting on a table. The composition is slightly distorted: the tabletop and the bowl do not follow a strict, consistent perspective, and this looseness with space is what draws the eye. In his late years Bonnard searched for new ways to depict space without relying on traditional perspective, and this work is a good example of that experiment. Warm tones in the fruit contrast with dark shadows that give the forms their volume, so colour shapes the surface more than outline does. It belongs to a group of still lifes he made during that decade. Today it hangs in the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, having been bought by the city in 1995 from the heirs of Claude Roger-Marx.
