David's equestrian portrait of Stanisław Kostka Potocki belongs to the years the French painter spent in Rome, when he was building the clean contours, well-defined forms and smooth surfaces that would make him the leading figure of French Neo-Classicism. It shows the Polish nobleman, politician and writer on horseback, wearing the sash of the Polish Order of the White Eagle, an honour he received in 1781. Potocki raises his hat in a welcoming gesture towards the viewer, the horse seems to bow before him, and a dog barks in the lower left corner. This combination of greeting, animal and rider conveys dignity and courtesy without the theatrical display of the Baroque. The upright format recalls the equestrian portraits of Rubens, here handled with the restraint of the new classical taste.

The origin of the commission remains debated. Potocki met David in Italy during his Grand Tour of 1779 and 1780, but it is unclear whether he requested the picture himself or whether Ferdinand IV of Naples commissioned it, a version passed down by David's grandson and given some support by a 2019 conservation report. Scholars also disagree about the exact date of execution, usually placed between 1780 and 1781, since the painting was finished in Paris and shown at the Salon of 1781.

The work reached Poland before 1801 and was placed in the Wilanów Palace, a royal residence built in the late seventeenth century for John III Sobieski and owned by the Potocki family since 1799. In 1805 the palace became one of the first public art museums in Poland, and the portrait was part of its displays. During the Second World War German forces looted it, and after passing through Soviet hands it was returned to Poland in 1956. It remains at Wilanów today. Its importance lies both in its painterly quality and in what it documents: the revival of the equestrian portrait in late eighteenth-century European painting, and the relationship between an enlightened patron and an artist who would soon lead French Neo-Classicism.
