Men of Skagen on a Summer Evening in Fair Weather
Martinus Rørbye, 1848

Painted in 1848 by Martinus Rørbye, one of the central figures of the Danish Golden Age, this oil on canvas shows a group of men in Skagen on a summer evening in fair weather. The landscape unfolds across dunes, the sea and houses, under an open sky with a few clouds, while birds and a duck fill the scene. Among the figures, a man in a tall top hat stands out, giving the work an ordinary, unhurried mood rather than a dramatic one. Rørbye knew the place well, having visited in 1833 and again in 1847. After the painting was shown at Charlottenborg, Frederik VII bought it for the royal collection. Its appeal lies in balance: restrained colour and a harmonious composition that turn the landscape into a calm stage. It also exemplifies how Golden Age painters portrayed the reality of the Danish countryside, focusing on everyday life rather than heroic subjects.
