Nationalmuseum

The Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden, is an art museum on the Blasieholmen peninsula in the city centre. It began in 1792 as the Royal Museum, formed from the crown's collections and first housed in a wing of the Royal Palace. Its present Renaissance-style building opened in 1866, the year it took its current name.

The holdings include paintings, sculpture, porcelain and close to half a million drawings dated between 1500 and 1900, alongside modern art. The core was built by Swedish monarchs through acquisitions, many of them war spoils and works from the Low Countries and Germany, and the eighteenth century brought rococo and French taste through Carl Gustav Tessin. Online, the most represented painter is Anders Zorn, followed by Bruno Liljefors and Aleksandr Roslin, while Rembrandt appears with The Cook and Simeon in the Temple. Other works listed include Pietro Perugino's Saint Sebastian, Lucas Cranach the Elder's The Payment, and Francisco de Goya's The Truth, Time and History. Visitors will also find François Boucher's The Triumph of Venus, Renoir's La Grenouillère, and Carl Larsson's Midwinter's Sacrifice.

The museum also stages temporary exhibitions, some of them internationally known. It closed for a full renovation of its building from 2013 until 2018, and its main works were shown at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in the meantime. Educational services were added in the early twentieth century, and a separate museum of modern painting and sculpture opened on the nearby island of Skeppsholmen in 1958.
