Savoldo painted this panel around 1521-1525, during the Italian Renaissance, and it is now in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. Its subject is the temptation of Saint Jerome, a familiar theme in religious art of the period. The figures on the right, which carry the saint's vision, owe much to Aeneas and Anchises in Marcantonio Raimondi's print after Raphael's The Fire in the Borgo, showing how the painter drew on borrowed models. The glow of the sunset recalls the Danube school of German painters and gives the scene a warm, melancholy light. Made for a private studiolo, the work pays homage to pictures by Hieronymus Bosch, some of which were held in Cardinal Domenico Grimani's collection in Venice. It probably relates to the same artist's The Temptation of Saint Anthony, now in San Diego. Its interest lies in the blend of Northern and Italian sources within a single devotional scene.
