This oil-on-panel painting by Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo, dated to around 1530, depicts the Gospel episode of the Transfiguration of Jesus, when his figure takes on an extraordinary light before the disciples. The work is now in the Uffizi in Florence, which also holds a preparatory drawing, allowing us to follow part of its making. Another study is in a Swiss private collection, and a late 16th-century copy, now in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan, shows that the composition enjoyed some circulation. Its attribution history is also revealing: while in the collection of Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici, Marco Boschini described it, and it was then assigned to an anonymous Venetian artist. It was later credited to Tintoretto and eventually returned to Savoldo, the painter who made it.
