Resurrection of Christ
Bartolomé Bermejo, 1475

This panel shows the Resurrection at the moment Christ rises from the tomb. Before him, an angel gazes at him in adoration, while the soldiers charged with guarding the sepulchre are left terrified by the miracle. In the middle distance, the three Marys can be seen leaving Jerusalem, carrying jars of perfume to anoint Christ's body.
The scene belongs to an altarpiece devoted to Christ, of which four compartments survive. Its painter, Bartolomé Bermejo, came from Córdoba but worked largely in the Crown of Aragon. His style is marked by an unidealised realism, and it shows innovations drawn from northern European painting, most notably the use of oil as a binder in place of egg tempera.
The work, dated 1475, is now held by the National Art Museum of Catalonia, which acquired it in 1914. It is useful for seeing how techniques and approaches from northern Europe were being absorbed into painting on the Iberian peninsula at the time.
