Museu de Belles Arts de València
Valencia, Spain · 29 works · 16 painters
The Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia, known in Valencian as Museu de Belles Arts de València, is a state institution run by the Generalitat Valenciana in the city of Valencia, Spain. Given the scale of its holdings, it counts among the country's earliest painting museums and is a key reference for the study of older Valencian masters. Its collection of Gothic panel paintings from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries has international standing, and among its best-known works are Diego Velázquez's Self-Portrait and pieces by Italian painters such as Pinturicchio and Gherardo Starnina.
The museum was officially separated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos in 1913 and began to be governed by a board of trustees. During the Civil War part of its holdings was moved to Madrid and deposited in the Prado Museum. After the conflict, plans to restore the former Carmen Calzado convent were set aside in favour of the Colegio de San Pío V, founded by Archbishop Juan Tomás de Rocabertí to train priests. The building was designed by Juan Pérez Castiel in 1683, although construction dragged on well into the eighteenth century. It combines a square-plan college with an octagonal church crowned by a dome of blue glazed tile, and its façade sits between the Baroque and Neoclassical styles.
The collection traces painting from the fourteenth century to the early twentieth. It brings together Valencian primitives of the International Gothic, such as Miquel Alcanyís, Gonçal Peris Sarrià and Pere Nicolau, alongside works of the Valencian Renaissance, including Joan de Joanes and Yáñez de la Almedina. The Baroque is represented by Francisco Ribalta, Jerónimo Jacinto Espinosa and Diego Velázquez, and the nineteenth century by Francisco de Goya and Joaquín Sorolla, the most frequently represented painter in the online selection. Among its rarities are works by artists seldom seen in Spanish museums, such as Pinturicchio and Giampietrino.
