Saint Julian the Hospitaller is a fresco fragment dated to around 1454–1458, painted by Piero della Francesca for the former church of Sant'Agostino, now Santa Clara, in Sansepolcro, Tuscany. It is now held in the city's Museo Civico, alongside other works by the painter such as the Resurrection and Saint Louis of Toulouse. It belongs to roughly the same period as The History of the True Cross cycle in Arezzo, generally regarded as the painter's major achievement. The saint appears as an unarmed knight wearing a red robe over a green outfit in contemporary fashion, a detail that brings the religious subject closer to the everyday world of its viewers. The fragment is incomplete: when the painting was detached from its original wall, the saint's legs, waist, hands and one shoulder were lost. Even so, the restrained figure and clear modelling of its forms show the Early Renaissance interest in order and proportion.
