Sierra Nevada en invierno
Joaquín Sorolla, 1902

Sorolla painted this view of the Sierra Nevada from the Adarves, the walkway at the Alhambra in Granada, in February 1910, during his second visit to the city and a few months after he had depicted the mountains in autumn. The composition is organised into three superimposed horizontal bands. In the foreground, on the left, low scrubland in reddish-brown tones appears, with a house and the crown of a tree breaking the uniformity of the ground. Behind it rise the snow-covered mountains under a blue sky dotted with white and grey clouds. The chosen moment falls just before sunset: the winter light neither reflects off the snow nor dazzles, but wraps the landscape softly, giving the whole scene a sense of calm and openness. The painting belongs to the founding bequest of the Museo Sorolla in Madrid, given by Clotilde García del Castillo, the artist's widow.
