Tipos del Roncal
Joaquín Sorolla, 1912

Tipos del Roncal is an oil on canvas painted by Joaquín Sorolla in 1912, now held in the Museo Sorolla in Madrid. The scene is set near the hermitage of the Virgin of the Castle in the Roncal valley, in Navarre, and gathers several local figures: Benita Daspa, her aunt Raimunda Monzón, and José Sanz, who wears the costume of a mayor. The title points to the genre of 'types', that is, people portrayed through their dress and everyday surroundings rather than as isolated individuals. Sorolla, best known for his luminosity and his handling of outdoor light, uses bright colours and loose brushwork to build the scene. Works of this kind on regional types help explain the painting's place within the Valencian artist's output of those years, when he travelled across Spain recording local customs and landscapes.
