This oil-on-panel painting shows the Virgin and Child flanked by two saints, Peter and Sebastian, in a composition of devotional character typical of Italian Renaissance religious painting. Its author, Giovanni Bellini, is one of the key figures of that period, and this work belongs to the broad group of images of the Virgin and Child that form a major part of his output. The catalogue entry dates it to 1480, while other references place it in 1487, so the chronology should be treated with caution. The wooden support and the oil technique allow for thin layers and soft transitions of colour and light, visible in the faces and the drapery.

The presence of Saint Peter and Saint Sebastian reflects the devotional habits of the time: Peter is a central figure of the Church, and Sebastian a widely venerated martyr. The arrangement of the figures invites a contemplative rather than narrative reading, focused on the bond between mother and child and on the calm gazes of the saints beside them. Nothing in the record points to a specific story being told, so it is best described simply as a work of devotional character.

The painting was acquired in 1859 by the Louvre in Paris, where it remains today. Its interest lies both in what it reveals about religious painting of its day and in its place within the work of a Renaissance master who returned repeatedly to this type of image.
