Fogg Museum

The Fogg Art Museum, in Cambridge, United States, is the oldest of Harvard University's art museums. It opened to the public in 1896 and now belongs, together with the Busch-Reisinger Museum and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum, to the group known as the Harvard Art Museums. The institution first occupied an Italian Renaissance-style building designed by Richard Morris Hunt. In 1925 its collections moved to a red-brick building on Quincy Street, designed by the firm Coolidge, Shepley, Bulfinch and Abbott, which recalls the Georgian architecture that was widespread in the United States and Canada in the eighteenth century. The earlier building fell out of use and was demolished in 1974. Between 2008 and 2014 the Quincy Street building was closed for a major renovation led by architect Renzo Piano, who linked the three neighbouring Harvard museums under a glass canopy; during those years a selection of works was shown at the Arthur M. Sackler Museum.
The collection is especially rich in Italian painting, from the early period through the Renaissance, and in nineteenth-century French and American masters. Among the early and Renaissance artists are Sandro Botticelli, whose Mystical Crucifixion appears in the online listing, alongside Fra Angelico and Lorenzo Lotto. European Baroque painting is represented by Rembrandt and Jan Steen, while nineteenth-century highlights include Jacques-Louis David, with his portrait of Emmanuel Joseph Sieyès, and Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, with the portrait of Augustine-Modeste-Hortense Reiset. Among the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, the listing includes three works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and two by Paul Cézanne, among them Still Life with Game Birds. There are also pictures by Claude Monet, The Gare Saint-Lazare: Arrival of a Train, and by Édouard Manet, Skating. Other names in the listing include Frédéric Bazille, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Joseph Mallord William Turner.
