Hospital de la Santa Caridad
Seville, Spain · 6 works · 2 painters
The Hospital de la Santa Caridad is a 17th-century Baroque complex in the Arenal district of Seville, Spain, close to the old city walls. It housed the Brotherhood of Santa Caridad, founded in the 15th century to move sick people, attend condemned prisoners and bury the dead. Miguel de Mañara gave it decisive momentum and steered it toward the living poor. The church holds works by Juan de Valdés Leal, such as Finis Gloriae Mundi and In Ictu Oculi, and several canvases by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, including San Juan de Dios and Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Tending the Sick. Some of Murillo's paintings were stolen in 1810 and later replaced with copies.
