Leiden Collection
New York City, United States · 49 works · 25 painters
The Leiden Collection is based in New York, in the United States. The sources available do not establish when it was founded or how its institutional history unfolded, so this presentation focuses on what its online selection shows. The paintings gathered on the website most likely belong to Dutch and Flemish art, mainly of the seventeenth century, as the names of their artists suggest. Rembrandt is by far the most represented painter, with twelve works, among them Minerva in Her Study and several busts and heads of old and young men. Gerrit Dou follows with seven paintings and Gabriël Metsu with four. Johannes Vermeer appears with Young Woman Seated at the Virginal, and Gerard ter Borch with Musical Company and a guardroom scene of soldiers smoking and playing cards. Other artists included are Godfried Schalcken, whose lamplit scene shows a young couple studying a statue of Venus, Pieter van Laer, Jan Lievens, Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Godfrey Kneller, the last represented by a scholar in his study. Taken together, the selection offers a view of portraiture, self-portraiture and genre scenes in the Netherlands, as reflected in the works the website presents.
