Avignon, France · 7 works · 7 painters
The Petit Palais is a former palace in Avignon, France, now housing a museum. Built around 1318-1320 as a cardinal's residence, it grew over the following centuries and took roughly its present form by 1503, largely thanks to the future Pope Julius II. It has operated as an art museum since 1976. Its collection concentrates on painting from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, with a notable Avignon school and a group of early Italian works once belonging to Giampietro Campana. Artists represented include Cima da Conegliano, Sandro Botticelli, Benozzo Gozzoli and Ludovico Mazzolino, alongside Lorenzo di Bicci and Bartolomeo Caporali.
