Tintoretto's Crucifixion fills a wall of the Sala dell'Albergo at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice, the room it was made for as part of the decoration of the confraternity's building. Its monumental size responds to that setting, meant to surround the viewer, and accounts for much of its impact. Christ on the cross stands at the centre, set against a leaden sky that threatens storm. Beneath him gathers a crowded group of mourners, led by the holy women, with the profiles of Saint John and Mary Magdalene standing out among them. In one corner, soldiers divide Christ's garments by casting lots, a mundane gesture that sharpens the contrast with the gravity of the moment.

The most striking feature is the arrangement of the scene. Although it looks chaotic at first glance, the figures are distributed along radiating lines that seem to originate from Christ's body, giving the composition a tightly controlled structure beneath its apparent disorder. Chiaroscuro gives volume to the groups of soldiers and to the crucified men, a device usually linked to the influence of Michelangelo, while the colour, with reds predominating, grows most intense where the light falls strongest.

The painting remains in the place for which it was made, which is unusual for large works of this kind. Tintoretto prepared the canvas with numerous drawings and a broad preliminary sketch applied directly to the surface, which recent restorations have revealed. Sartre wrote about the torn yellow of the sky, reading it as anguish turned into matter, an interpretation that shows how the work has attracted attention well beyond art history.
