María convaleciente
Joaquín Sorolla, 1907

María convaleciente shows María, the painter's daughter, during her recovery from tuberculosis at the La Angorilla estate in El Pardo. Sorolla painted it in 1907, and the canvas captures a period of rest and convalescence spent in a family setting. Rather than an action scene, the work conveys a mood of calm and waiting, fitting for a stay devoted to recovery. Because the sitter is his own daughter, the picture is often read as a personal document, which sets it apart from much of Sorolla's output, where open-air scenes and commissioned portraits were more common. The painting is now held by the Museo de Bellas Artes de Valencia. Its significance lies both in its intimate character and in the way Sorolla brought domestic life and family affection into his art.
