Saint Catherine of Alexandria
Luca Signorelli, 1512

This tempera on panel depicts Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a figure honoured for her learning and her martyrdom. It is dated to around 1512 and is attributed to Luca Signorelli. According to the reference sources, it is not an independent work but a fragment from the predella of an altarpiece that has been lost, so its original composition and its place within the whole can only be partly reconstructed. Given its small format and its secondary role within an altar, it is understood as a devotional piece meant to be seen up close. It is now held in the Horne Museum in Florence, where visitors can appreciate Signorelli's handling of tempera on panel, a technique that demands precise drawing and thin layers of colour, and that reflects the Renaissance language of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.
