Sleeping Venus, also known as the Dresden Venus, is one of the works that best sum up the turn of the Venetian High Renaissance towards the female nude set in a landscape. Its main historical interest lies in its being the first major known painting of a reclining nude woman in Western art, a motif that would be repeated for centuries afterwards. Before it, large female nudes were rare in painting and usually appeared within groups or in prints, rather than as the sole subject of a large canvas.

Venus fills almost the entire scene, lying on cloths that seem to merge with the landscape. The goddess's profile follows the rounded hills behind her, so that body and nature read as one continuous curved form. This relationship between figure and setting is among the most distinctive features of the work. Her left hand rests over the pubic area and her right arm is raised above her head, gestures that critics have read as a restrained erotic suggestion, though the woman's expression is one of calm sleep rather than provocation.

The cool, silvery tones of the landscape are among the most debated aspects. The painting is traditionally attributed to Giorgione, although it is thought to have been left unfinished at his death and that Titian completed the sky and background. Over time the attribution has been revised, and today Titian's share is often considered to be larger than once thought, possibly even in the figure. X-ray studies in the twentieth century revealed earlier changes to the composition, including a Cupid that was painted over.

The picture passed through several noble collections and reached the court of Augustus the Strong of Saxony, and it is now in Dresden. Its influence is wide: it can be traced in Titian's reclining Venuses, in Velázquez's Rokeby Venus, and in later nudes by Goya and Manet. For the visitor, its appeal lies in the balance between sensuality and serenity, between the body and the landscape.
