The Harvard Art Museums belong to Harvard University in Cambridge, in the United States, and bring together three museums: the Fogg, the Busch-Reisinger and the Arthur M. Sackler, along with four research centres. The three museums were merged into a single institution in 1983 under the name Harvard University Art Museums, and the word "University" was dropped from the name in 2008. The collections hold roughly 250,000 objects in every medium, from antiquity to the present day, with origins across Europe, North America, North Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
The Fogg Museum, opened to the public in 1896, is the oldest and largest of the three. Its Western painting holdings run from the Middle Ages to the present, with particular depth in Italian Renaissance, British Pre-Raphaelite and nineteenth-century French art. The Maurice Wertheim Collection gathers Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works, and the Grenville L. Winthrop Collection, bequeathed to Harvard in 1943, forms a core part of the museum. Among the artists most represented online are Dante Gabriel Rossetti, with four works, and Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, Gustave Moreau, Paul Cézanne and Eugène Boudin, with three each. Notable paintings include My Lady Greensleeves and A Vision of the Sea by Rossetti, The Golden Age by Ingres, The Singer with the Glove by Edgar Degas, and Saint Sebastian and the Angel by Moreau. El Greco's expulsion of the merchants from the temple is also held here.
The Busch-Reisinger Museum, founded in 1903 as the Germanic Museum, is the only museum in North America devoted to art from the German-speaking countries. It moved to Werner Otto Hall in 1991. The Arthur M. Sackler Museum opened in 1985 and takes its name from its major donor, a psychiatrist and philanthropist; the name has been contested since 2018 because of the family's link to the marketing of OxyContin.
Between 2008 and 2014 the historic Quincy Street building was renovated and expanded to a design by Renzo Piano, reuniting the three museums under one roof.
