Musei di Strada Nuova
Genoa, Italy · 55 works · 38 painters
The Musei di Strada Nuova are a group of museums in the historic centre of Genoa, on Via Garibaldi, Italy. They occupy three former palaces on that street, which give their names to the sections: Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Tursi.
Palazzo Rosso holds a painting collection featuring Van Dyck, Guido Reni, Guercino, Bernardo Strozzi, Albrecht Dürer, Paolo Veronese, Gregorio de Ferrari and Mattia Preti. Among the works listed online are Guercino's The Suicide of Cato and The Cook by Strozzi, along with several portraits by Van Dyck, such as the Portrait of Paolina Adorno Brignole-Sale, and Dürer's Portrait of a Young Man.
Palazzo Bianco is an important picture gallery, with works by Caravaggio, Veronese, Hans Memling, Gerard David, Rubens, Zurbarán, Murillo, Luca Cambiaso, Strozzi and Magnasco. Memling is represented by The Man of Sorrows Blessing, and the gallery also holds Zurbarán's Saint Eufemia and Saint Ursula, part of his series of female saints.
Palazzo Tursi contains, among other works, Antonio Canova's Penitent Magdalene, as well as collections of ceramics and coins and a room devoted to Paganini. There is kept Il Cannone, his favourite violin, made by Giuseppe Guarneri in Cremona in 1742, which Paganini bequeathed to the city of Genoa in his will.
The website lists 55 paintings from these collections, with Anton van Dyck most prominent, with eight works, followed by Bernardo Strozzi with six and Guercino with four.
