Baile de tarde is a large oil on canvas that Ramón Casas painted in Barcelona in 1896, within his ongoing interest in scenes of social life. Unlike other works from the same year, where the crowd works as a collective protagonist, here the painter lingers on many individual figures, each with its own gesture and small anecdote, so the scene feels closer and more everyday. The picture belongs to a group of works from this period that shows Casas's versatility: he moved easily between subjects and handled both small and very large formats, achieving a different effect each time. In later years the Círculo del Liceo, which acquired the painting, commissioned him to decorate one of its rooms, a sign of the close ties between the artist and this Barcelona society. Today the canvas is regarded as a good example of Catalan modernisme in its more social vein.
