Moulin de la Galette Interior
Ramon Casas, 1890

This oil painting by Ramon Casas depicts an interior scene of the Moulin de la Galette, the famous dance hall in Montmartre, Paris. Unlike the lively nocturnal images usually associated with the venue, Casas turns away from the festive atmosphere to focus on a quieter moment: in the foreground, a young woman seems unmoved by the affectionate gesture of a couple, while a musician above plays his instrument. The viewpoint, close to that of another version of the same subject, places the viewer almost inside the scene.
The work belongs to a series of interiors of the Moulin de la Galette that Casas painted during his stay in Paris between 1890 and 1891, a period when he trained and shared a bohemian life with Catalan friends. It was shown at one of his exhibitions at the Sala Parés in Barcelona and later in a retrospective of his career. It is now held by the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, where it sits alongside other early twentieth-century works that complete the picture of Catalan modernism.
