Over My Dead Body
Ramon Casas, 1893

Over My Dead Body is an oil on canvas painted by Ramon Casas in 1893, and belongs to a group of interior scenes with a female figure that the artist developed at the beginning of the 1890s. Here a young woman stands between two doorways, her posture suggesting that she is looking out at someone and keeping them from entering the room. The open doors at the far end of the room add an uncertainty about where she actually is, so the viewer is left wondering whether she stands inside or outside the space and what lies beyond. This ambiguity turns an everyday setting into a question about place and intent. The work was originally called Summer Study, a title that was for a time replaced by the more striking one now in common use. Miguel Utrillo restored it after Casas's solo exhibition at the Sala Parés in 1900. It is a fine example of the Modernista interest in domestic life and its symbolic charge, and it is held in the National Art Museum of Catalonia in Barcelona.
