The Fortune-telling
Julio Romero de Torres, 1922

The Fortune-telling, painted around 1922 by Julio Romero de Torres, shows two women seated on the sill of a window, their attention centred on the reading of a fortune that gives the work its title. The intimate scene contrasts with the urban landscape opening behind them, a view of Córdoba recognisable through several of its best-known landmarks, including the Fonseca fountain, the palace of the Marquis of Fuensanta del Valle and the Cristo de los Faroles. Romero de Torres was closely tied to his native city, and here the townscape serves as a backdrop that places the scene in a recognisably Cordoban setting. The composition is organised around the window, which frames the figures and separates interior from exterior, while the warm palette and sensuous treatment of the female figures are recurring traits of his work. The painting now belongs to the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Málaga, where it can be seen as an example of his distinctive blend of Andalusian genre painting and allegory.
