Vividoras del amor
Julio Romero de Torres, 1906

Vividoras del amor is an oil on canvas painted by Julio Romero de Torres in 1906, during a period when he devoted considerable attention to brothels and the lives of the women who worked in them. The scene shows four women in a brothel waiting for clients, their restrained poses suggesting weariness and anticipation rather than overt eroticism. The most striking feature is their arrangement: the figures are stacked so that their heads line up one above another, like the steps of a staircase, and behind them a plain masonry stair without a handrail reinforces this metaphorical reading. The painting was submitted to the 1906 National Exhibition in Spain, but the jury rejected it as immoral, an episode that reveals the tension between genre painting and the moral codes of the time. Today it belongs to the art collection of the Caja de Canarias and is displayed at the Casa de Colón Museum in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
