The grace
Julio Romero de Torres, 1913

The grace is a large oil painting by Julio Romero de Torres, conceived as a companion to his 1913 work The sin. Where the earlier canvas shows sin, this one presents virtue as its counterpart, and both share the painter's fascination with the female figure and with moral themes, though here the mood is calmer and more solemn. At the centre, a half-nude woman is supported by two nuns, one standing and one kneeling, while an elderly woman watches from behind. On the right, a young woman dressed in mourning dries her tears with a handkerchief and holds a lily, a flower commonly associated with purity. The background shows the Guadalquivir river, the Roman bridge and the Calahorra tower, placing the scene in Córdoba, while the San Rafael cemetery and the church of Santa Marina add to the devout urban setting. The work was shown at the 1915 National Exhibition of Fine Arts and is now displayed in the Julio Romero de Torres Museum alongside The sin.
