Lucretia is an oil-on-canvas painting by Paolo Veronese, known as Veronese, held in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. It is usually dated to around 1580, although some sources place its execution between 1584 and 1585, so the exact date should be treated with some caution. It belongs to the Mannerist movement and to the genre of history painting.

The scene draws on the Roman tradition transmitted by ancient authors: Lucretia, after being forced to yield to the demands of the son of Tarquin the Proud, resolves to take her own life by plunging a dagger into her chest. The painting focuses on that decisive instant, when she is about to carry out the act that, in the moral thinking of the period, restored her honour. The moment chosen invites the viewer to linger on the tension between the victim and her own decision.

Many artists, among them Titian, Rembrandt and Raphael, returned to this subject, placing Veronese's version within a long series of interpretations. Rather than the intense dramatic emphasis of some of those painters, what sets this canvas apart is the close attention to material detail: the fabric that wraps the figure, with its folds and textures, and the jewels that adorn the woman, including the pearl necklace and the bracelet. This interest in the sheen and surface of objects is one of the hallmarks of the Venetian painter.

The image also includes details such as her fair hair, gathered into a double braid, and the neckline of her dress, which lend an elegant, almost sensual register to a scene of violence. The blood is shown with restraint, conveying the gravity of the act without explicit brutality.

The work matters because it shows how a classical theme could be renewed through colour, the richness of paint and the sophistication of drapery, qualities highly prized in late Renaissance Venetian painting and in the Mannerism that followed.
